Don't tell me this ain't my jam
When I rave so hard to this song.
Don't assume I'm gonna lose my shit
When I found out you've done wrong.
Don't judge me without any knowledge,
Like many others I'm a flawed human.
Don't expect me to smile and laugh
When you always take me for a ride.

I belong to nobody,
I am my very own person.
You can't dominate me,
So don't you dare try it.

Don't put silly words in my mouth
When I'm capable of expressing words.
Don't think of me as an immature brat,
You'd be surprised at how wise I am.
Don't put me down at your level,
I despise rolling around in the dirt.
Don't insult my intelligence with lies,
The day will come when you'll regret it.

I'm important like anyone else,
We all deserved to be loved, admired.
Your words do not leave a mark,
They bounce off and fly away.
This is a poem for April 15th in celebration of National Poetry Month 2015.
